YOUNG RIDERS

are you a young rider?

Young riders gain valuable dressage experience at our competitions
  • A Y/R is a rider who is under the age of 21. Should you turn 21 during the year, you are considered a Y/R till the end of the calendar year. Consideration of performance is viewed over four competitions for the year.

    Sugarloaf will usually run separate Preliminary 1A class for Y/R’s. A separate 1st place prize will be awarded.

    At the end of the year a Young Rider of the year (YROTY) and a reserve Young Rider of the year (RYROTY) will be awarded, based on accumulated points throughout the year.

    We also look at these Young Rider classes when sponsoring Y/R’s to attend State Dressage Competitions.

    Point score is allocated by adding all percentages gained throughout the year. Only the highest points from each dressage day and from one mount will be added. For example, if you are riding two horses. Horse one achieves 65% and 55% and horse two scores 60% and 70%, horse two’s scores will be added to your YR points.

    Y/R scores from these classes don’t contribute to the Horse of the year (HOTY) or Pony of the Year Points (POTY) unless in the event you have overall placed in the 1st 6 placings of the event with the required %’s

    PLEASE NOTE. Young Riders are expected to volunteer at our competitions in order to be eligible for our YR of the year Award, NOT just to get family members to assist on their behalf.

  • Entering As a Young Rider

    As a club we support and recognise the accomplishments of our YR in a variety of ways.

    We have one Preliminary class at each competition where Young Riders get an opportunity to compete against other Young Riders only.

    If a competitor enters the Preliminary 1.1 YR class, they cannot enter the Preliminary 1.1 Foundation Horse or Pony class as well. First place prize and ribbons to 8th place are awarded. No points are awarded to YROTY.

    Eligibility for Young Rider of the Year

    See Pointscore page for more details.

  • We can sponsor up to 6 riders at the YR Championships on the criteria outlined below and at the discretion of the committee.
    How: Based on the three criteria below

    * Performance
    * Potential, and
    * Assistance given to the club

    We may make contributions towards entry fees and club embroidered riding attire/equipment.

Young riders (YR’s) are very important to our club as they are the future in dressage competitions, the rising star’s and maybe a future committee member.
